How to Reduce the Urea Level in the Serum

Urea is the final metabolic waste of nitrogenous substances of human being and other mammals. Nitrogenous substances have toxicities to the body and it comes from the metabolism of the proteins and amino acids that is the deamination. In the process, the nitrogen compounds will be turned into urea and the non-nitrogen compounds into carbohydrate or fat. After the urea is produced in the liver, it will be released into the blood and then filtered in the kidneys and be discharged out of the body with the passing of urine. The normal concentration of urea in the blood is 2.5-7.5 mmol/l.
Since the urea is filtered in the kidneys and some kidneys damages will cause the dysfunction of the filtration of the urea and other wastes, thus leading to the accumulation of the urea in the body and the increase of urea level. In this condition, the key point is to repair the kidney damages, increase the filtration rate of the urea and block the progression of renal fibrosis. So long as the kidney damages are repaired and the kidney functions are improved, the excessive urea in the body will be discharged and the serum urea will decrease naturally.
Of cause there are many other reasons that can lead to the increase of the urea in the serum except the kidney damages. So it is very necessary for the patients to first rule out other reasons and make clear the real and root causes of the increased urea and seek proper treatment and measures accordingly. Then I will list the common reasons that will cause the increase of the urea in addition to renal problems.
1. The increase of the production of the urea because of the following reasons such as high protein diet, gastrointestinal bleeding or accelerated decomposition due to infections, fever, trauma, surgery, corticosteroids or hunger as well as the inhibited protein synthesis.
2. Urinary tract obstruction will lead to the decrease of the filtration and the increase of the re-absorption of the urea and lead to the increase of the urea.
The above two causes are much simpler than the renal damages. So long as the cause of the urea increase is removed, the urea level will decrease. In case of renal damages, proper treatments should be received as soon as possible because high level of urea will cause many damages to the kidneys and other organs. At the same time of reducing the urea, treatments that can repair kidney damages and improve kidney functions should be sought too so as to solve the problem from the root and prevent further kidney damages.
